Update on my 2011 fitness goals or “Why P90X is not as scary as I thought it would be”

I promised I would keep you updated on my 2011 fitness goals and I’ve just passed a milestone in my current workout, so I thought I would share.

To give you a quick recap, I started out the beginning of the year with the basic goal of just starting to work out.  I have never been able to stick with any kind of routine and was always so frustrated with the way I looked.  After the birth of our second son, everything about my body was different and I was done feeling frustrated.

I started the first five months of the year with Jillian Michael’s 30-Day Shred, doing two full rounds.  Check out my round one update and round two update.  I lost about 18 pounds total, but gained more than I can ever say.  I gained confidence.  I gained motivation.  I gained the knowledge that I could actually stick with and finish something related to fitness.  I gained the courage to try something new.

The 30-Day Shred was a great place to start for me, it’s only about 25 minutes total including stretching.  Part of the challenge for me in starting a routine was finding a way to work it into my busy schedule, so a short workout was key.  Otherwise, I’m not sure I would have stuck with it in the beginning.

After finishing two rounds of the Shred, I was definitely starting to feel like I had a hit a plateau.  The workouts were still hard enough, but basically all I was doing was getting my heart rate up.  I wasn’t feeling sore anywhere or feeling like my muscles were being challenged.  I knew I needed to switch it up.

My husband and little brother had been doing the P90X workout videos for awhile, but I pretty much swore up and down I would never do them.  Way too hard and intimidating, plus they were almost an hour per video, some even more!  How could I ever possibly fit that into my schedule?

And then I forced myself to do one workout.  And then another.  And then another.

And then I decided to just officially start the whole darn thing.

I’m now over halfway through the 90 days and am seriously amazed with my progress.  I am much stronger, I am siginificantly more fit, my clothes fit better.  The workouts are a great mix of cardio, strength training, weight training, plyometrics and stretching.  You do a different video every day of the week, so it challenges different muscles every day.  The exercises are tough, there’s no doubt.  However, they are manageable and they do a really good job of showing modified moves or advanced moves for every exercise.

Before you look at these pictures, let me add a disclaimer.  Please ignore the ridiculous post-workout, post-baby hair.  If you’ve had kids, you know what I’m talking about.

7 Weeks in to P90X









It is kind of hard to tell in these pictures, but there have been significant changes.  I do have a picture in shorts and a sports bra, but I didn’t want to offend anyone by publishing it in the post.  I don’t mind sharing with those who want to see it however, so here’s the link if you are interested.  Please know I haven’t had any sort of defined ab muscles since high school.

I haven’t lost a single pound.  I feel like this is important to say because in my case, it doesn’t seem to matter.  I have lost inches, the shape of my body has changed, I have gone down another jean size, but I am the same weight as when I started.

When I first started working out, I was lucky if I squeezed in two workouts per week.  Now, I can’t stand to miss one single day.  No matter what is going on my with my day or how I feel, it doesn’t occur to me anymore to skip a workout.  It’s become as much a part of my routine as taking a shower or feeding my kids breakfast.  There are some days when my workouts take twice as long because I’m wrestling the weights away from my kids, playing referee, dodging flying Mater and Lightning McQueen and adding countless jumping jacks per my personal trainer (aka my 3-year old).

It took a minimum of six months to develop this routine.  I can fully understand why I have struggled to develop a routine in the past, as I had to force myself many days and many weeks to stick with this.  Especially during those weeks when I felt like I saw no progress.  It’s truly been a lifestyle shift.

Even though I’m only halfway through, I can feel myself getting stronger every day.  Each day I can do a few more reps of an exercise or make it through an entire exercise without taking a break.  I can’t wait to see how I feel during the second half!

I found a great P90X community on Twitter, where everyone is really supportive and quick to offer an encouraging word or advice if you need help.  I am also following Taryn Perry, a semi-local Beachbody coach who is super-motivating,
