Kitchen Tips: Cooking bacon in the oven

Cooking Bacon in the Oven with This Beautiful Frugal Life

This is THE way to cook bacon!  My mother-in-law who refuses to cook bacon because of the smell/mess might actually approve of this method.  Give it a try and you won’t want to go back to a skillet.


1 lb. package of bacon
Baking Sheet
Aluminum Foil
Metal Cooling Rack


Line a baking sheet with foil (to make cleanup easier). Place cooking rack on top of foil, arrange bacon slices on the rack and place the baking sheet on the center rack of a COLD oven. Close oven door. Turn oven on to 400°F. Walk away.

Come back 17 to 20 minutes later. As soon as the bacon is golden brown, but not excessively crisp, it’s done. The exact time will depend on the thickness of the bacon slices, and also on how quickly your oven reaches the target temperature. Remove the pan from the oven. Transfer the bacon to another sheet pan lined with paper towels to absorb the fat.

Side note from Melody: Seriously.  You must cook bacon this way.  I’ve always done it in the oven, but never on a cooling rack which is a totally brilliant idea!

This is the only way I cook bacon! I don’t know why you’d want to deal with the greasy pan mess when you can throw away the grease with the foil and have perfectly crisp bacon!

Does the grease splatter all over your oven? I have never tried this method because i hate cleaning my oven.

I have never had an issue and I’ve done this tons of times! I fold up the edges of the foil to make a little “bowl” to make sure all the grease gets caught.

Thank you so much for posting this – we’ve been using this method for our Saturday breakfast for a few weeks now, and it works great – less work and less mess too! In fact, I had to come back online this morning to lookup the proper temperature again!
