I know how much y’all love Costco and I thought you might be interested to see what an average shopping trip looks like for our family. We do eat a LOT. We eat mainly whole foods, fresh produce, lean meats and very little dairy or grains. Our household consists of my husband and I, two toddlers boys who eat their body weight in food and my teenage brother who eats everyone’s body weight in food.
- Mushrooms – These are a staple in our house. Diced, they help stretch a stew or chili. Sliced, they get sauteed almost every day and mixed in with some greens for a salad. The price is comparable to just about every grocery store out there.
- Spinach – This is possibly the largest bag of spinach I’ve ever seen and it’s only about $4.50. I’ve seen bunches of spinach at the grocery store for around that price. We use it in green smoothies every morning, sauteed, in omelettes, every where that green stuff should be.
- Sweet Potatoes – At the beginning of the season when Costco first starts carrying them, they are a freaking steal at $.69/pound. Even though they have gone up to just over $1/pound, they are still worth it and totally delicious. No hem hawing at the grocery store over whether you are getting yams or sweet potatoes or white sweet potatoes or something else completely unknown. I roast two trays of these almost every day to add to salads or to just shove in my face or to add to muffins.
Other Items From Around the Store
- Half and Half – At around $3 per half gallon, I rarely find this cheaper anywhere else (and barely try, to be honest). I use about one carton per week in my homemade coffee creamer (either Chocolate Almond or Date Caramel Vanilla).
- Kirkland Signature Pure Vanilla – Fantastic price for vanilla that actually tastes like a vanilla bean. I use this in baking, but also in my homemade creamer, so I need it to not taste like chemicals.
- Organic Pure Maple Syrup – Hard pressed to find real maple syrup anywhere that’s cheaper than Costco. Again, I use it in my homemade creamer, but also to top grain-free pancakes and as a binder in these mad delicious Coconut Chocolate Chip Macaroons.
- Cottage Cheese – While we don’t have a whole lot of dairy in our house, this is definitely one of our fridge staples. I use it everyday as a salad dressing and my kids eat small bowls for lunch on occasion. The only time I find it cheaper is when it’s a generic store brand and it’s JUST NOT THE SAME.
- Jimmy Dean Sausage – This is a relatively new find for our family. At just $2.83/pound, this is an unheard of price for a sausage that has minimal ingredients (read: pretty much just pork). No weird fillers and it’s totally delicious. Every Wednesday night, I haul off to the coffee shop and blog for a few hours while the boys kick it at home and this Sweet Potato Hash with Sausage and Eggs is my go-to meal to leave them.
- Olive Oil – We don’t cook with olive oil anymore, but I do use it in homemade dressings and vinaigrettes so I want it to be tasty as the flavor shines through in these recipes. Love that Costco’s brand is cold-pressed with minimal processing and a great price to boot.
