Netflix: One-month free trial of unlimited streaming services

by Melody on February 22, 2012

If you have been thinking about trying out Netflix in addition to your monthly cable subscription or perhaps in place of it, now is a great time.  They are offering a one-month free trial to all new and some former Netflix members.

Netflix offers unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows directly to your computer, tablet or other Internet-connected device.  You can stream directly to your TV through the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 and several other devices.

If you aren’t familiar with Netflix, you can see quick instructions on how it works and browse their movie/TV show selection before you even sign up.  They have tons of different movie choices, from current films to documentaries.

We signed up for a free trial several months ago when we canceled our cable and LOVED it.  My husband loves to browse through all the different options and we watched so many amazing documentaries during our trial that we had been wanting to see (Food Inc. was our favorite).  My husband and our 3-year old also had a blast scrolling through some of the “old” cartoons like Scooby Doo.  We have a Roku box hooked to our TV that allows us to directly stream Netflix with very little fuss.

It’s a very long story on why we didn’t choose to continue with Netflix and had our cable reinstalled.  It’s absolutely nothing to do with Netflix (we loved it), but rather 6 blacked out Mariners games on our “MLB Package” and one very frustrated husband.  Let’s be honest, a very frustrated wife as well.  For us, Netflix combined with our local cable channels through our antenna would have been more than enough if sports weren’t such a big hit in our house.

To begin your free trial, sign up here.  You will be able to cancel anytime simply by going to your account and following the instructions.  If you would like to continue with Netflix, do nothing and your account will automatically be renewed.  After your free trial, you will pay just $7.99 per month.

My parents have the direct mail option through Netflix, which is just $7.99 more per month.  Through this option, you choose from a huge list of available movies and they will send you one at a time.  You can keep it as long as you wish (no late fees) and as soon as you return it, they send you another from your list.  This is a great option for those of you who watch movies quite a bit or have family members who can’t agree on what to watch.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Netflix if you have tried it or are using it.

A little over a year ago, we signed up with Netflix as a way to convince my husband to get rid of all the premium movie channels he thought he “needed”. He’s been more than happy with Netflix – and we now use it more as a family than we ever used the premium movie channels. It was a great budget move too since it saved us about $30 a month.
