My Sunday shopping trip + insight into how I save money on "real" food

by Melody on April 19, 2011

My husband stayed home with the kids Sunday afternoon and I did some serious marathon shopping.  I’m lucky in that I have three stores within a few blocks of each other so I’m not wasting gas running all over town.

Several of you have asked for pictures of my own shopping trips and to see how I “work” the deals.  I truly don’t have a massive stockpile.  I only get two newspapers each week and that is basically where my coupons come from.  As you’ll notice, I pick the coupon deals that I want from each store, then pick up what fresh items are on sale while I’m there.

Total spent: $14.43 + received $10 +UP Reward
Bottom line: $4.43 for all items in both pictures!

* I didn’t have enough coupons to do the Nivea body wash deal, but found two bottles on clearance for $2.99, used my $3/1 coupons from the 4/17 SS and got them free!

Total spent: $8.85 ($4.98 was for strawberries)

Total spent: $1.15
* Used $3 in catalina coupons from last week’s Purex sale
I felt like this was (and is) a really good week for couponing and deal shopping.  I was able to pick up items that our family uses all the time and really didn’t have to spend too much out of pocket.
My favorite strategy for saving on fresh produce and other non-coupon items (like eggs and bread) is to pick the best-priced items at the stores I will already be at that week.  I try to not chase every deal and run to the store everyday, so I do my best to make each trip really effective.

I get asked quite often if I buy groceries without coupons.  DEFINITELY.  I do shop the coupon deals to help build our stockpile or even to make money to use towards other items.  We can not live on free items from Rite Aid (I wish).  Our family eats fruit and vegetables with every meal, so I just have to be a smart shopper.

What has been your favorite deal this week?
