After scouring Rite Aid for prices for the coming week’s match ups, the boys and I packed up and trekked on down to the Pasco farmer’s market. This was the first time I have been this year and I was thoroughly impressed. They have a great selection, the prices are really competitive and the whole thing is shaded (especially nice in the 90 degree+ weather today).
I just love going to the farmer’s market! Getting to talk to the people who actually work for the farm, chatting about the produce, pointing out all the different items to my kids and just knowing that everything we pick up is local and super fresh. Two of the stands I bought from today threw in extra items at no cost. Tip of the day: Take very cute children with you and they will attract attention and get you free produce.
For everything in the picture above, I spent just $4.20! And that’s two full pounds of tomatillos.
Speaking of tomatillos, I’ve never actually used them. I’ve always been too chicken to pick them up at the store. I have seen a zillion recipes using them, but am looking for suggestions from you. Something delicious please.
This is what we picked up from our CSA (Finley’s Fresh Produce out of Hermiston) yesterday. The red potatoes are “melt in your mouth like butter” delicious. We pay, on average, about $6 per week for three “shares” of produce. I’m considering getting a fourth share next year, just so I can eat more potatoes. I’ll never be able to buy them from the store again.
For around $10, we are totally stocked for the week in delicious, local and crazy fresh produce. Not to mention that my garden is spitting out cucumbers faster than I can cut them off the vine.
I love summer!
