Jessie’s Favorite Things to Buy at Costco

by Melody on February 28, 2012

Last week, I shared my favorite things to buy at Costco.  There are several other things that we buy quite a bit, but these were the items we pick up on a very consistent basis.  As every family is different and shopping wants/needs can vary so much, we thought it would be fun to share Emilie and Jessie‘s favorites as well.

From the feedback from my list, several of you are using Costco to your advantage.  They have some amazing deals if you know your stock-up prices, including an ever-expanding natural/organic section.  With less and less time for serious coupon shopping for some of us, Costco has become a wonderful supplement.

A little about Jessie

Jessie is the recipe contributor for us and she also shares her amazing recipes on her blog Bites.  As of this month, she is the Mama to three sweet babes.

Jessie’s Favorites (as written by Jessie)

La Brea Bakery Petite Loaves (sold 6 in a bag in the fresh bread section) –  I am obsessed with these loaves.  These freeze beautifully and come out of the oven tasting like fresh bread.  I love adding them to meals that I’m bringing to new moms and I LOVE using them to make mini grilled cheeses.

Goat Cheese –  The price cannot be beat and it is only one log that can easily be used up in 2 recipes.  I love the creaminess and the way it makes any dish seem fancy. (Check out Jessie’s recipe for Balsamic Goat Cheese Chicken)

Nutella (2 pack) – do I really need to explain the awesomeness of Nutella?  It’s just amazing and I can never have enough of it in my house. (Check out Jessie’s blog for all things Nutella)

Bag of Frozen Organic Peas– My kids eat these frozen.  When I’m finishing up dinner and they are starving, I just scoop up small bowls for each of them to snack on and they’ve eaten the whole bowl before I know it.Flank Steak – They have a high quality cut of meat.  I usually freeze them in the marinade so while it’s defrosting it is soaking up the yummy flavors. (Check out Jessie’s recipe for Carne Asada)

Egg Nog – I know this is a seasonal item but I had to include it because Costco egg nog is in a league of its own.  Don’t waste your time buying the watery versions elsewhere, Costco egg nog is the best!

Carter’s Footed PJs – All of my friends’ kids have the same pajamas because we all buy them at Costco.

Kirkland Laundry Detergent – I’ve been incredibly happy with its stain-fighting power.  It competes with all the name brands.

Contacts – Our optometrist is located in our local Costco and we’ve been so happy with his service.  I always buy my contacts from their optical department.  I have never found a better price and my insurance always reimburses me so I get more bang for my buck.  Recently, my prescription changed in one eye and I still had 6 boxes left of the old prescription.  The Costco optical department exchanged them for the new prescription, no questions asked.  What great customer service!

Tires – Whenever we need new tires, we wait for a coupon to come up at Costco and we get them there.  They also have fantastic customer service.  For example, my husband has a nail in his tire and we’ll be going to Costco tonight to get it fixed for free!

I could go on and on. Stamps, Kirkland batteries, Kirkland TP, Kirkland baby wipes, Kirkland trash bags, Kirkland ham (for holidays), spices, Kirkland natural PB, Organic strawberry spread, Kirkland maple syrup.

For my favorites and why we are shopping Costco more and more, read my post here.

I’ve spent quite a few hours compiling a list of my stock-up prices including Costco comparison prices, so if there is something you are looking for, definitely check it out.  Please let us know about your favorites, I’d love to hear what you all have found to be the best deals for your family!

I will have to check out the petite loaves – we are addicted to the La Brea Torta Sandwich Rolls! They are thin enough to actually eat a cold sandwich on, they make THE BEST panini sandwiches, or split open and spread with garlic butter and toasted for a side with soup. Yum, yum, yum. I also always pick up a rotisserie chicken. Usually we can get one meal for the family, then a pile of leftover meat for sandwiches or quesadillas for a few days, and I use the carcass to make a really flavorful chicken broth that I freeze for homemade soups. At $3.99, what a deal!
Other things we can’t do without from Costco are the frozen bags of boneless skinless chicken thighs, the frozen organic haricots verts and the frozen spinach ravioli. The ravioli is my go-to meal when my husband is out of town or for the kids when we are headed out for a date night because it’s quick and easy and also delicious and fairly healthy.
I also like the 2-pk of Kirkland brand whole wheat bread – it is cheaper and bigger than grocery brand and we go through bread like crazy packing lunches for school.
