January Fitness Goals Update

This is not only an update of my fitness goals, but an update on how I actually figured out how to edit photos online.  These are the pictures I would have shared with you at the end of the year if I had figured it out then.  Much more effective when you can see the before and after side by side, right?  You can read my full 2011 fitness goals update here.

My husband started P90X2 at the beginning of the year with me.  He has been talking about getting back into exercising, but it was hard for us to find a time to make it work.  He goes to work really early in the morning and by the time our boys are in bed, he’s exhausted.  We finally decided that he would work out immediately after getting home around 4 in the afternoon.  I truthfully was terrified that the boys would never let me finish dinner preparations during that hour that he was working out, but they’ve been wonderful.  It’s worth it to me to have him working out and staying healthy.

He’s also involved in a weight loss challenge through work, so we’ve been tracking our weight loss and taking measurements for each other.  After the first month, he has lost 13 pounds and 8 inches (hooray!).  I did lose 3 inches, but I also gained a pound.  Granted, I have been on my weight loss journey for a year now and really don’t have much more weight to lose.  I can definitely feel the 3-inch loss in the way my pants fit, it seems to be mostly around the waist.   Plus, P90X2 is a TON of weight lifting, so that pound is most likely muscle.  Not like the 3 pounds I gained over Christmas.  That was definitely not muscle.

My thoughts on the scale

While I know weight loss is a huge goal for most people (and it was for me in the beginning), it makes me sad when people measure their results solely based on what the scale says.  I honestly try to avoid weighing myself anymore because it makes me discouraged, especially now that the number isn’t changing much.

In my personal opinion, the best indicators are how you feel and how your clothes are fitting.  The scale can do funny things to our willpower and self-esteem.

Update on our 2012 goals

Fitness goals

This month has been wonderful for both my husband and I.  I think it really helped that I was already in such a set routine, so neither of us are attempting to talk the other out of exercising.  It’s really true what every single fitness guide and personal trainer will tell you, having a workout buddy makes all the difference.  The few times he and I have been able to work out together, I definitely found myself pushing harder.  I couldn’t let my husband do more Mule Kick Burpees than me.  It just wouldn’t be right.

Nutrition goals

We have been eating pretty well, with far less processed foods.  We’ve been subbing out white flour and replacing it with wheat flour in most cases, although I’m thinking whole wheat pastry flour might be better in some cases.  Most recipes have turned out great, but some have been a little dry and crumbly.

I donated the last of our canned vegetables and a full bottle of vegetable oil.  We have been picking up the 5 pound bags of organic frozen veggies at Costco and I’m subbing in coconut oil for vegetable oil.  Small changes, but I’m hoping each month to try a few new things.  I love the idea of being more aware of what we are eating and focusing on more whole foods, but I told Emilie as I was donating the last of my stuff that I felt like I was “giving up convenience!”.  Our menus definitely take a little more forethought these days.

Trying a new class/activity

A deal popped up a few weeks ago on Shaun T’s Rockin Body workout, which is sold by the same company that sells P90X. Shaun T is the trainer who does the Insanity videos, which are, obviously, completely insane.  I bought Rockin Body with the plan that I would do one of the short 7 workouts on my off days from P90x.  They are all great videos with fabulous workouts, but they are all set to music and include dance moves that my body does not do well.  I totally break a sweat and it’s a lot of fun, but I don’t think I’ll ever let anyone watch me do it.  Including my family.

Way to go Melody – keep up the great work in all the changes you’ve made!!

I’m trying to be more consistent in my workouts, so far so good. I am using the Your Shape Fitness Evolved, which is a good alternative for me when I am just not up to doing the 30 Day Shred. By alternating, I don’t get into the pattern of not working out for days in a row, which gets difficult to overcome.

I also changed the time of day when I am working out, which has had a huge impact for me.

I am curious about people’s opinions on canned tomatoes. All the articles lately have made me want to move away from using canned tomatoes with BPA, but it’s a struggle with a lot of recipes I use and fresh tomatoes are expensive, especially when you need a lot for spaghetti sauce! I know I can stock up this summer and do some of my own canning, but was curious as to what people do in the winter? We too are slowly swapping things out for more natural items and starting to make even more homemade items like granola bars and bread. You are right about the biggest struggle being convenience!!

My opinion is no BPA is okay. However, it’s really hard to be a purist with the difficulty in finding food that fits your budget and the confusing options. I’m trying to eliminate anything in a can and go to all jarred, homemade as much as possible.

This list is good, if accurate.

I feel your pain, trying to figure out what is good and bad is so overwhelming. You just have to do the best you can and eliminate what you can.

Do you use any jarred or boxed tomatoes…….I’ve heard that trader joes carries a BPA free option. I haven’t made it there to check the prices.

WHat an awesome transformation Mel, I started 30 days Shred a couple of weeks ago, I love how it is only 20 mins and it works, I have been running for over a month now and I can already feel the difference, my body is changing and I’ve lost 12 pounds since january 3. I will now switch to level 2 of the 30 day shred. thank you for motivating me to loose weight. Awesome work. you are looking very good girly!

WTG Mel. I started 30 Day Shred Sunday. It kicked me the 1st day but today I was able to keep up.
