Ellie workout apparel product review + 20% off all orders

by Melody on July 15, 2013

I was recently contacted by a representative of Ellie workout apparel and they wanted to know if I was interested in trying out some of their products.  Since I have been secretly stalking their website and dreaming of the day I could afford to order a brand new outfit, I jumped at the chance!  Their stuff is super, super cute and I love the way their website is laid out, but I am reluctant to promote or share anything that I don’t have personal experience with, especially when it involves spending a decent amount of money on something you can’t try on.

First off, their website is fantastic.  New collections of clothes are released periodically, based around a certain style or color trend.  Their clothes are laid out by outfit, not just individual tops and bottoms.  This allows you to see a full outfit together and they pair pieces that are meant for a similar workout style.  They show several different views of each outfit and the description is very thorough.

Shipping is FREE on orders of $100 or more or a flat rate of $7.95 for orders less than $100.  You can also choose a different approach and join their Fit Fashionista Club.  For a flat rate of $49.95 per month, you can choose two items from any collections.  You are free to choose a top and a bottom, two tops, anything you want.  This is a crazy deal, since the majority of their pieces are around $50 EACH.  Exchanges for like merchandise are free as well, so if you purchase an item that doesn’t fit, you can exchange for a different size at no charge.

I chose the Fun in the Sun Tank from the California Dreams collection and the Double Decker Capri from the Coral Crush collection.

And please.  Can someone tell my CrossFit friends to let me know when I have chalk on my face BEFORE taking a picture for the blog?

The tank is AMAZING.  It has a built-in sports bra and drapes just a little in the front to create a very flattering shape.  It is just loose enough to not get in the way while I am working out, but doesn’t cling to every extra ounce on your belly.  It is very breathable and the bra is super supportive.  I was a little concerned about just wearing the one-piece top, but the bra never moved an inch.  The band along the bottom is very thick and holds everything in place.  Although this top is priced at $59.95, it’s a fabulous deal when you consider you’re getting both a quality tank AND a bra all in one.

While both the pants and top are recommended for lower impact movements like yoga, I felt that they both held up extremely well to an intense CrossFit workout.  The days I wore the outfit, we did both solid strength training and a full 30 minute workout and both held up really well.  That’s just 215 pounds, nothing to worry about.

The pants are perfect and I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to workout capris.  I never once had to adjust them, even throughout a crazy sweaty workout that involved weight lifting and hanging from a pull-up bar and bringing my knees up to my elbows approximately 452 times.  Never moved an inch.  They are made from just 12% spandex, so have a bit of a stretch but never stretched out.

My favorite part about the pants is the waist.  Originally, when you put them on, they are pretty high waisted.  They suck everything in without being super tight, which is awesome.  They have a flap on the waist band that folds down, giving you the option to have a straight gray pant or a pant with a pop of color along the top.  Since it was making me hot to have the high waist, I even folded both down to create a lower waist and they still stayed put.  I love the different options!

Check the size chart carefully since you can’t try these on.  I ended up ordering a size up since my thighs and behind are a smidge bigger than my waist size would imply (thanks CrossFit!).  Since there isn’t quite as much stretch, this gave me the extra room I needed to not feel sucked in like a sausage.

If I had to complain at all about the pants, it would be the color.  Our gym isn’t air-conditioned and it’s been well over 95 degrees where I live, making for a very sweaty girl during workouts.  While the material is very breathable and I never FELT hot, the sweat definitely showed in an area I would prefer that it didn’t. These pants (or a similar Ellie capri) would be amazing in black!

All in all, I was really impressed with the whole Ellie shopping experience.  I LOVE their website and they have so many different styles and colors to choose from, you are bound to find something you love.  While I know the pieces are a bit more expensive than going to Target or Walmart, they are quality and are going to hold up well across many, many workouts.  I’ve mentioned before that I’d rather have one or two really good pieces that fit well and don’t need to be adjusted, over tons of different pieces that make working out uncomfortable.

Ellie’s new July collection, Summer Splendor, was just released today!  Definitely check out the A Touch of Ruby Capris.  I’m already dreaming about new pants.

Disclosure: Ellie did provide me with an outfit to review at no charge, but there was no additional compensation for this post and the opinions are all mine.  You know how much I like to work out and any excuse to do it for the blog is fine with me.
