Earth Day Ideas: Activities for kids and freebies

by Melody on April 20, 2012

I did a round-up of some fun Earth Day activities and recipes for our latest MOPS newsletter and I thought it would be fun to share them with you, plus a few more I have found along the way.  Earth Day seems to have more meaning for me the older my kids get and the more they are understanding.  We have been talking a lot about recycling, reducing waste in our house and saving energy (all in toddler terms of course).  It has been a challenge for me to teach my boys in ways that will actually mean something to them, so I went in search for some fun activities.

Children’s books to read (All these are Amazon links, but don’t forget to check your local library)

Earth Day Activities

  • Blow green bubbles or use green sidewalk chalk
  • Take a trash hike around your neighborhood (my kids and I are doing this!)
  • Take a “donation tour” of a thrift or secondhand store
  • Plant herb pots or a small container garden

We have been talking with our kids a lot about not wasting water while washing our hands and brushing our teeth, turning off lights when we leave the room and not flushing the toilet 27 times per potty trip.

I’ve been trying to get them involved with taking out the trash and the recycling.  Although I think my conversation today was overshadowed by the sheer awesomeness of the recycling truck.

I’ve also been trying really hard to include them in planting our backyard garden.  I love the fact that my 3-year old even knows that chard exists, although he hasn’t really seen it yet.  Last year, he ate a LOT of kale, simply because he thought it was cool that he could pick it from the backyard.  It’s possible we may have some hybrid vegetables this year, thanks to a certain wild toddler.

You can also check out my Earth Day Pinterest board for a few more ideas.  Definitely take a look at the Earth Day Cupcakes, those things are being repinned like crazy!

Freebies for the rest of the family (Sunday, April 22nd)
