We had the flu this entire week, yet I still managed to make it to the store more times than I’d like to admit.  While it does look like I shop a lot, this really was one trip to Costco and one additional trip spread out over three stores.  Our Winco, Fred Meyer and Rite Aid are all within blocks of each other so it took less than an hour for all three.  I don’t want you to think you need to devote your entire life to grocery shopping just to overhaul your budget.

Trip #1 – Costco
Total spent –
$40

Cottage cheese and eggs for easy protein, broccoli, organic frozen green beans and a HUGE bag of spinach all about $5 each and mushrooms for a great price per pound.  I just make sure we have some recipes ready to incorporate these larger quantities of produce when I buy them.  I can find a home for spinach in just about any recipe, so no problems there.

IMG_1991

Trip #2 – Fred Meyer
Total spent:
$18

Since we were sick and didn’t feel like eating a thing, I picked up a few items to make one of my favorite chicken soups, laced with lots of veggies and sweet potatoes.  Walking by the meat department, I noticed quite a few of their bright orange meat markdown stickers so took a look.  I was able to snag two 5-pound+ fryer chickens for less than $5 each and a 5-pound package of drumsticks for less than $5.

This is one of my favorite ways to save money on our grocery budget.  Just by keeping an eye out while I’m shopping and knowing what a good stock-up price is on most items, I was able to save a few dollars on items that can easily be turned into several meals.

IMG_1992

Trip #3 – Winco
Total spent –
$33

My shopping trips to Winco look just about the same from week to week.  I round out my fresh produce for the week with whatever is on sale (cauliflower $.89/lb!), pick up all my bulk items for Homemade Larabars and lunch meat for another easy protein.

I’m making cupcakes for a baby shower this weekend and needed some “traditional” ingredients.  Instead of buying a big bag of sugar that will just hang out in my pantry, I picked up just what I needed in the bulk department.  While I may have spent a little bit more per pound (not much), I won’t have any that goes to waste.

IMG_1993

Trip #4 – Rite Aid
Total spent –
ZERO!

Several of you have asked me if my toiletries, paper products and other miscellaneous items are included in our grocery budget and they are!  I do very little coupon shopping these days, but I still do get one Sunday newspaper so I can do a few small transactions at Rite Aid.  I was able to pick up the items above for absolutely nothing after combining coupons and Rite Aid’s rewards programs.  With just a little bit of extra effort, this frees up money for all the food we want to buy.

For more information on Rite Aid, read my weekly post here.

Online purchase – Tropical Traditions
Total spent –
$60

Tropical Traditions has been my absolute favorite place to get organic raw honey and I was poking around their site one night, I found a few other products I wanted to try out.  My friend Dani and I split the order because we both wanted to try the coconut cream concentrate.  Apparently, you can mix this with water and make your own coconut milk for a fraction of the price.  Plus, it can be used in lots of different Paleo sweets.  I’m excited to try it!

I also picked up some unsweetened cocoa powder, unsweetened coconut, pumpkin puree and a few spices to round out my cabinet.  I was pleasantly surprised with their organic spice collection, some right around $3 per bottle.

Total spent: $150

My total this week was more than usual because of the Tropical Traditions purchase, but they will last me for quite some time and I shouldn’t have to make another purchase for awhile.  My fridge and pantry are really full and will more than get me through the week.  I did place an order for 40 pounds of Zaycon chicken and even though it doesn’t arrive until April, I need to budget that in as well for this month!

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Garlic Mustard Drumsticks
:: Chipotle Chicken with Roasted Sweet Potatoes
:: Sweet Potato and Kale Chicken Patties
:: Tomato Basil Beef Soup

Extras

:: Homemade Larabars
:: Roasted Garlic and Tomato Salsa
:: Strawberry Banana Ice Cream for Valentine’s Day
:: Chocolate Truffle Cookies for Valentine’s Day

Please share something fun from your meal plan this week!  What are you making?  I’d also love to hear if you budget week to week like this.  It’s been an interesting change of pace for me to keep up with the weekly happenings of our money, instead of just tracking at the end of the month.

For those of you who are trying to get your grocery budget under control (aren’t we all?) or looking for some ideas on how others do their shopping, I thought I would share what my weekly trips look like.

I try to do my meal planning on Saturday or Sunday for the coming week.  I first take a quick look at what is still in the fridge from the previous week and what we have in the pantry.  This way I’m not buying duplicates or too much fresh food that we won’t be able to go through.  We are still trying to keep our budget as low as possible this month (I BUSTED it last month), so are doing our best to eat through what we’ve got in the freezer.

Once I have written out our tentative meal plans, I do one decent-sized shopping trip to flesh out our meals.  Every few weeks, I supplement with a trip to Costco or Fred Meyer.  Or I shop every day, like this week.  Don’t judge.  I couldn’t get it together this week.

Trip #1, 2 and 3 – Costco

Please note that all the purchases in the picture above (a box of diced tomatoes and baby bella mushrooms not shown) were made over 3 separate trips.  I have no idea why, but please don’t make this a habit.  Not very efficient.  One trip was exclusively to pick up my brand new food processor, so I’m giving myself a pass.

These trips cost just about $43.  This includes four dozen organic eggs, a ginormous bag of carrots that will last me through the entire month, cottage cheese for easy protein and some fresh fruit.  Sometimes the mandarin oranges at Costco are hit or miss, but these were perfect.  The diced tomatoes are for homemade salsa.

IMG_1979

IMG_1983

Trip # 4 and 5 – Fred Meyer

I swear to you, I did other things besides shop this week.

The first trip was a total score.  If you catch it right, you can snag mark-down produce at Fred Meyer and really make your dollars stretch.  Just be sure you are able to eat through it or freeze it before it goes bad.  Both boxes of mushrooms and strawberries were marked down to just $.99 each, which is a total steal.  The mesh bags of peppers were just $1 each and one had an extra zucchini!

The second trip, I picked up grapes at $2.49/lb (about as low as they go this time of year), chicken at $1.88/lb and sweet potatoes to flesh out our chicken soup.  The frozen spinach was just $.79 for a HUGE bag, total steal for my husband’s breakfast egg muffins.  For both trips, I spent about $28.

IMG_1982

Trip #3 – Winco

My shopping trips to Winco look just about the same from week to week.  I round out my fresh produce for the week with whatever is on sale (pineapples $1.99 each!), pick up all my bulk items for Homemade Larabars and lunch meat for another easy protein.  I spent right around $31 for everything.

Total spent: $102.  Oddly enough, exactly the same amount I spent last week.

My goal per week is between $100 and $120, which has been a bit of a stretch for us.  I’m going to need to bump up that amount in the next week or so to replenish our freezer.  Especially with Zaycon chicken!

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Shredded pork in crockpot with diced tomatoes and adobo chilies
:: Easy Potato and Bacon Casserole
:: Garbage Stir Fry with Curried Cabbage
:: Curried Cream of Broccoli Soup
:: Kale, Bacon and Cheese Breakfast Casserole

Extras

:: Homemade Larabars
:: Caramel Cheesecake Bars – For girls night!
:: Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

Apparently, I’m all about breakfast this week.  Please share something fun from your meal plan this week!  What are you making?

I try to do my meal planning on Saturday or Sunday for the coming week.  I first take a quick look at what is still in the fridge from the previous week and what we have in the pantry.  This way I’m not buying duplicates or too much fresh food that we won’t be able to go through.  I’ve been really trying to eat through the protein we have in the freezer (elk meat, roaster chickens, pork steaks) to keep our monthly budget low(er).  Or low-ish. Or semi-low.  Or lower than a family of 10.  I’ll go with that.

Once I have written out our tentative meal plans, I do one decent-sized shopping trip to flesh out our meals.  Every few weeks, I supplement with a trip to Costco or Fred Meyer.  Or both, like this week.  I try really hard to stay out of the stores as much as possible, all that happens is I spend more money than I intended.  I’m not enticed by the impulse items at the checkout, but by pretty red bell peppers or a great price on cucumbers.  Not that these are bad purchases, but they can still be budget busters if you don’t watch it.

Trip #1 – Fred Meyer

Last week, Fred Meyer had cauliflower for an amazing price of $.88/lb.  I used it to make Cauliflower Rice, Roasted Curry Cauliflower and cauliflower puree to throw in our scrambled eggs in the morning.  I’m not a huge “Vegetables for Breakfast” type person, so this is a great way to get my nutrients in.

I also picked up cashews to make Paleo Caramel Cheesecake Bars.  Grapes were at a decently low price and I found a huge display of bananas that had been marked down to $.44/lb, which is right around Costco’s price.  We eat the heck out of these things for snacks, throw them in French Toast Scramble and use them in smoothies.  I spent about $28 on this trip.

Trip #2 – Costco

We probably average two trips to Costco per month, three on occasion.  Thank goodness their hours don’t totally jive with my kids’ preschool hours and our gym trips, otherwise I would be there every day.

On this trip, I picked up tons of fresh produce to use for snacks and side dishes for the week.  I love having the frozen green beans handy, as they only take about 15 minutes start to finish if I need something quick.  We throw the kale in everything, in omelettes, in smoothies for the kids, in salads.  The bag of organic baby kale in the picture above is only about $5 or $6, fantastic price and LOADED with nutrients.

The cottage cheese is an inexpensive protein and we use it to jazz up salads, the half and half is for my Chocolate Almond Creamer for my coffee and their organic eggs are a decent price at $3.50 per dozen.  I spent about $40 on this whole trip.

Trip #3 – Winco

Winco is where I have been doing the bulk of my weekly shopping, now that I have cut way back on my coupon shopping.  Their prices are generally lower on an everyday basis and they have a fantastic bulk section!

I spent about $34 on TONS of produce, lunch meat from the deli, pitted dates and raisins from the bulk section and a huge tub of yogurt.  I had a few specific produce items on my list, but also checked out prices as I walked the aisles.  The red bell peppers were less than $.70 each and the avocados were a steal at $.48!

Total spent: About $102

My goal per week is between $100 and $120, which has been a bit of a stretch for us.  You’ll notice that I didn’t buy any meat or milk this week, which would have made it well over $120.  I’m working hard this year to find a good balance from month to month.

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Fauxtisserie Chicken from Our Best Bites
:: Cobb Salad with leftover chicken
:: Meat Crust Quiche
:: Kale, Carrot and Avocado Salad

Extras

:: Roasted Balsamic Green Beans and Mushrooms
:: Homemade Larabars
:: Caramel Cheesecake Bars – For Super Bowl!

Share with us!  How are you doing with your grocery budget this year?  Have you made any changes?

Kroger-Instant-Win-Game

Head on over to play the Kroger Instant Win game and possibly win up to $15 off your next purchase at QFC, Fred Meyer and other Kroger affiliates.  Just choose your store, log in to your account, add five products to your “shopping list” to unlock the game and pop your balloon to see if you’ve won.  I didn’t this time, but it said you can log in again tomorrow to play.

If you only have a Fred Meyer in your area (like me), choose QFC as your store and your account information should work just fine.  I have done this in the past and my eCoupons have been added to my Fred Meyer card without problems.

Good luck.  Let us know if you win something!
