Costco

The new Costco coupon mailer starts this Thursday, March 7th.  I ran in to the store this week to check on prices for you, here are some of my favorites.  These prices were gathered from my local store, so your prices may vary slightly.  There were a few items I just couldn’t find in two separate trips, so be sure to check your store for these as well.

I also noticed lots of new summer items!  Shorts, shoes, swim suits, short sleeved work and play shirts in the clothing section.  Their new play sets are up, along with tons of gardening tools and accessories, potted trees, fertilizer and dirt and much more.

Some time ago, my good friend Jessie and I started meeting at Costco to split some items each month.  You know Jessie as our recipe contributor from Bites.  I can’t even remember now whose idea it was but I’m going to give Jessie all the credit because  she’s usually the brilliant one in our friendship. That girl comes up with the most amazing, creative and helpful ideas!

Basically, we split items that our entire family won’t use before they go bad or that are expensive and keep us from sticking to our grocery budget.  Have you ever seen a Costco bag of onions? Or their 2-pack of lemon juice? How about their block of yeast?  We both have a family of five and even though we feel like all we do is feed people, we just can’t get through some of the items from Costco.  This is a a great way to eliminate waste and have more diversity in our menus.

Because we both use a Dave Ramsey style budget and love to cook it’s super hard to get exciting ingredients like goat cheese, pine nuts or even just splurge on fancy bread and stay in the monthly grocery budget. The first of every month we meet at Costco armed with a crazy list, six kids between us and lots of snacks.  It takes about an hour to do the shopping, checkout, get the kids a smoothie  or piece of pizza and split everything up.

We made a list of some of the items we have split at Costco in the past.  Feel free to use it as a guide if you try to plan a trip to split with a friend. As I think of more items we have split or we find new items to split, I’ll update the sheet. This is a picture of Jessie with her full Costco cart.  Imagine two of these.  And six kids.  That’s us at Costco on the 1st of the month.  And, it’s usually raining.

Costco Cart

A few tips:

  • Bring supplies: We bring grocery bags, ziplocks, a food scale, scissors, and sometimes a huge knife, ha! We like it to go as quick as possible because we are splitting packages in the parking lot.  Having the right supplies makes it snappy.
  • Be patient: It adds some time to your shopping trip but it’s super fun to catch-up with your friend and find out what they are cooking. In theory it should go faster because you are splitting up to conquer the list, but physically splitting items does take a little time at the end of the trip.
  • Make your list early: We tend to make our lists towards the middle of the month and go back and forth through email quite a few times as we discover things we need to add on as it gets closer to the end of the month.  I try to do my rough menu plan for a month so I can take full advantage of the trip.
  • Find somebody who eats like you do: Jessie and I like a lot of the same foods. It makes it easy to find helpful items to split. We’ll even email recipes with our split wish list to show what we are using the item for.
  • Leave your kids with Dad if you can: Honestly, when we have all six kids, it’s rough.  It’s 100 million times nicer without them all, or with half of them.
  • Help each other out: In different seasons when one of us is particularly busy or just had a baby, one of us will do all the shopping and deliver the split items to the person who can’t get to the store.  It’s a blessing to me when I need the help and a blessing to get to help a friend who needs a delivery.
  • How to Pay: It seems to work best if one person pays and the other person just writes a check or gives cash for half.  Costco will subtotal with tax so we usually just put our split stuff on the belt first, they subtotal, then the person paying can still buy the rest of their stuff in the same transaction.  If some items don’t split evenly (a 3-pk for example), we just do the math to figure out the cost per unit and one person takes an extra item and also pays for it.

Ask us some questions about this process! We’ve been doing it for a couple of years now and I love how it helps me stay on budget and gives me a chance to be more creative in my menu planning.

We had the flu this entire week, yet I still managed to make it to the store more times than I’d like to admit.  While it does look like I shop a lot, this really was one trip to Costco and one additional trip spread out over three stores.  Our Winco, Fred Meyer and Rite Aid are all within blocks of each other so it took less than an hour for all three.  I don’t want you to think you need to devote your entire life to grocery shopping just to overhaul your budget.

Trip #1 – Costco
Total spent –
$40

Cottage cheese and eggs for easy protein, broccoli, organic frozen green beans and a HUGE bag of spinach all about $5 each and mushrooms for a great price per pound.  I just make sure we have some recipes ready to incorporate these larger quantities of produce when I buy them.  I can find a home for spinach in just about any recipe, so no problems there.

IMG_1991

Trip #2 – Fred Meyer
Total spent:
$18

Since we were sick and didn’t feel like eating a thing, I picked up a few items to make one of my favorite chicken soups, laced with lots of veggies and sweet potatoes.  Walking by the meat department, I noticed quite a few of their bright orange meat markdown stickers so took a look.  I was able to snag two 5-pound+ fryer chickens for less than $5 each and a 5-pound package of drumsticks for less than $5.

This is one of my favorite ways to save money on our grocery budget.  Just by keeping an eye out while I’m shopping and knowing what a good stock-up price is on most items, I was able to save a few dollars on items that can easily be turned into several meals.

IMG_1992

Trip #3 – Winco
Total spent –
$33

My shopping trips to Winco look just about the same from week to week.  I round out my fresh produce for the week with whatever is on sale (cauliflower $.89/lb!), pick up all my bulk items for Homemade Larabars and lunch meat for another easy protein.

I’m making cupcakes for a baby shower this weekend and needed some “traditional” ingredients.  Instead of buying a big bag of sugar that will just hang out in my pantry, I picked up just what I needed in the bulk department.  While I may have spent a little bit more per pound (not much), I won’t have any that goes to waste.

IMG_1993

Trip #4 – Rite Aid
Total spent –
ZERO!

Several of you have asked me if my toiletries, paper products and other miscellaneous items are included in our grocery budget and they are!  I do very little coupon shopping these days, but I still do get one Sunday newspaper so I can do a few small transactions at Rite Aid.  I was able to pick up the items above for absolutely nothing after combining coupons and Rite Aid’s rewards programs.  With just a little bit of extra effort, this frees up money for all the food we want to buy.

For more information on Rite Aid, read my weekly post here.

Online purchase – Tropical Traditions
Total spent –
$60

Tropical Traditions has been my absolute favorite place to get organic raw honey and I was poking around their site one night, I found a few other products I wanted to try out.  My friend Dani and I split the order because we both wanted to try the coconut cream concentrate.  Apparently, you can mix this with water and make your own coconut milk for a fraction of the price.  Plus, it can be used in lots of different Paleo sweets.  I’m excited to try it!

I also picked up some unsweetened cocoa powder, unsweetened coconut, pumpkin puree and a few spices to round out my cabinet.  I was pleasantly surprised with their organic spice collection, some right around $3 per bottle.

Total spent: $150

My total this week was more than usual because of the Tropical Traditions purchase, but they will last me for quite some time and I shouldn’t have to make another purchase for awhile.  My fridge and pantry are really full and will more than get me through the week.  I did place an order for 40 pounds of Zaycon chicken and even though it doesn’t arrive until April, I need to budget that in as well for this month!

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Garlic Mustard Drumsticks
:: Chipotle Chicken with Roasted Sweet Potatoes
:: Sweet Potato and Kale Chicken Patties
:: Tomato Basil Beef Soup

Extras

:: Homemade Larabars
:: Roasted Garlic and Tomato Salsa
:: Strawberry Banana Ice Cream for Valentine’s Day
:: Chocolate Truffle Cookies for Valentine’s Day

Please share something fun from your meal plan this week!  What are you making?  I’d also love to hear if you budget week to week like this.  It’s been an interesting change of pace for me to keep up with the weekly happenings of our money, instead of just tracking at the end of the month.

For those of you who are trying to get your grocery budget under control (aren’t we all?) or looking for some ideas on how others do their shopping, I thought I would share what my weekly trips look like.

I try to do my meal planning on Saturday or Sunday for the coming week.  I first take a quick look at what is still in the fridge from the previous week and what we have in the pantry.  This way I’m not buying duplicates or too much fresh food that we won’t be able to go through.  We are still trying to keep our budget as low as possible this month (I BUSTED it last month), so are doing our best to eat through what we’ve got in the freezer.

Once I have written out our tentative meal plans, I do one decent-sized shopping trip to flesh out our meals.  Every few weeks, I supplement with a trip to Costco or Fred Meyer.  Or I shop every day, like this week.  Don’t judge.  I couldn’t get it together this week.

Trip #1, 2 and 3 – Costco

Please note that all the purchases in the picture above (a box of diced tomatoes and baby bella mushrooms not shown) were made over 3 separate trips.  I have no idea why, but please don’t make this a habit.  Not very efficient.  One trip was exclusively to pick up my brand new food processor, so I’m giving myself a pass.

These trips cost just about $43.  This includes four dozen organic eggs, a ginormous bag of carrots that will last me through the entire month, cottage cheese for easy protein and some fresh fruit.  Sometimes the mandarin oranges at Costco are hit or miss, but these were perfect.  The diced tomatoes are for homemade salsa.

IMG_1979

IMG_1983

Trip # 4 and 5 – Fred Meyer

I swear to you, I did other things besides shop this week.

The first trip was a total score.  If you catch it right, you can snag mark-down produce at Fred Meyer and really make your dollars stretch.  Just be sure you are able to eat through it or freeze it before it goes bad.  Both boxes of mushrooms and strawberries were marked down to just $.99 each, which is a total steal.  The mesh bags of peppers were just $1 each and one had an extra zucchini!

The second trip, I picked up grapes at $2.49/lb (about as low as they go this time of year), chicken at $1.88/lb and sweet potatoes to flesh out our chicken soup.  The frozen spinach was just $.79 for a HUGE bag, total steal for my husband’s breakfast egg muffins.  For both trips, I spent about $28.

IMG_1982

Trip #3 – Winco

My shopping trips to Winco look just about the same from week to week.  I round out my fresh produce for the week with whatever is on sale (pineapples $1.99 each!), pick up all my bulk items for Homemade Larabars and lunch meat for another easy protein.  I spent right around $31 for everything.

Total spent: $102.  Oddly enough, exactly the same amount I spent last week.

My goal per week is between $100 and $120, which has been a bit of a stretch for us.  I’m going to need to bump up that amount in the next week or so to replenish our freezer.  Especially with Zaycon chicken!

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Shredded pork in crockpot with diced tomatoes and adobo chilies
:: Easy Potato and Bacon Casserole
:: Garbage Stir Fry with Curried Cabbage
:: Curried Cream of Broccoli Soup
:: Kale, Bacon and Cheese Breakfast Casserole

Extras

:: Homemade Larabars
:: Caramel Cheesecake Bars – For girls night!
:: Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

Apparently, I’m all about breakfast this week.  Please share something fun from your meal plan this week!  What are you making?

For those of you who are trying to get your grocery budget under control (aren’t we all?) or looking for some ideas on how others do their shopping, I thought I would share what my weekly trips look like.

I try to do my meal planning on Saturday or Sunday for the coming week.  I first take a quick look at what is still in the fridge from the previous week and what we have in the pantry.  This way I’m not buying duplicates or too much fresh food that we won’t be able to go through.  I’ve been really trying to eat through the protein we have in the freezer (elk meat, roaster chickens, pork steaks) to keep our monthly budget low(er).  Or low-ish. Or semi-low.  Or lower than a family of 10.  I’ll go with that.

Once I have written out our tentative meal plans, I do one decent-sized shopping trip to flesh out our meals.  Every few weeks, I supplement with a trip to Costco or Fred Meyer.  Or both, like this week.  I try really hard to stay out of the stores as much as possible, all that happens is I spend more money than I intended.  I’m not enticed by the impulse items at the checkout, but by pretty red bell peppers or a great price on cucumbers.  Not that these are bad purchases, but they can still be budget busters if you don’t watch it.

Trip #1 – Fred Meyer

Last week, Fred Meyer had cauliflower for an amazing price of $.88/lb.  I used it to make Cauliflower Rice, Roasted Curry Cauliflower and cauliflower puree to throw in our scrambled eggs in the morning.  I’m not a huge “Vegetables for Breakfast” type person, so this is a great way to get my nutrients in.

I also picked up cashews to make Paleo Caramel Cheesecake Bars.  Grapes were at a decently low price and I found a huge display of bananas that had been marked down to $.44/lb, which is right around Costco’s price.  We eat the heck out of these things for snacks, throw them in French Toast Scramble and use them in smoothies.  I spent about $28 on this trip.

IMG_1974

Trip #2 – Costco

We probably average two trips to Costco per month, three on occasion.  Thank goodness their hours don’t totally jive with my kids’ preschool hours and our gym trips, otherwise I would be there every day.

On this trip, I picked up tons of fresh produce to use for snacks and side dishes for the week.  I love having the frozen green beans handy, as they only take about 15 minutes start to finish if I need something quick.  We throw the kale in everything, in omelettes, in smoothies for the kids, in salads.  The bag of organic baby kale in the picture above is only about $5 or $6, fantastic price and LOADED with nutrients.

The cottage cheese is an inexpensive protein and we use it to jazz up salads, the half and half is for my Chocolate Almond Creamer for my coffee and their organic eggs are a decent price at $3.50 per dozen.  I spent about $40 on this whole trip.

IMG_1975

Trip #3 – Winco

Winco is where I have been doing the bulk of my weekly shopping, now that I have cut way back on my coupon shopping.  Their prices are generally lower on an everyday basis and they have a fantastic bulk section!

I spent about $34 on TONS of produce, lunch meat from the deli, pitted dates and raisins from the bulk section and a huge tub of yogurt.  I had a few specific produce items on my list, but also checked out prices as I walked the aisles.  The red bell peppers were less than $.70 each and the avocados were a steal at $.48!

Total spent: About $102

My goal per week is between $100 and $120, which has been a bit of a stretch for us.  You’ll notice that I didn’t buy any meat or milk this week, which would have made it well over $120.  I’m working hard this year to find a good balance from month to month.

Here’s what on the menu for the week:

Main Dishes

:: Fauxtisserie Chicken from Our Best Bites
:: Cobb Salad with leftover chicken
:: Meat Crust Quiche
:: Kale, Carrot and Avocado Salad

Extras

:: Roasted Balsamic Green Beans and Mushrooms
:: Homemade Larabars
:: Caramel Cheesecake Bars – For Super Bowl!

Share with us!  How are you doing with your grocery budget this year?  Have you made any changes?

My personal Costco shopping trip

by Melody on January 9, 2013

photo(4)My son and I ran to Costco yesterday to restock our fridge and pantry and it occurred to me that I haven’t shared a shopping trip in a long time.  While it’s true that not everything at Costco is a fantastic deal or worth picking up, if you know what you’re looking for AND know your stock-up prices, it can be totally worth it.

I spent about $70 on everything shown above, including:

  • TONS of fresh produce
  • 5+ lb pork loin (I will split into thirds and freeze)
  • Organic diced tomatoes ($.75/can)
  • 2 lbs of queso fresco

I had a few specific items on my list, but also knew I was going to check out prices and buy produce based on what was available and what was a good price.  This is one of the most important methods I use for saving money on our grocery budget.  While we may not have a coupon for produce and it may not be on “sale”, just knowing what is a good price per pound or per ounce can save you tons of money.  You can easily reference my Pantry/Household Stock-up Price List for ideas on good produce prices.

As you may have noticed, I didn’t pick up anything from the home mailer for January.  While I think there were several good deals this month, there wasn’t anything we were desperate for and I’m really trying to stay within budget this month.

I’d love to hear how you shop Costco!  What tips and tricks do you have for staying within budget?

Costco has an absolutely AMAZING toy section during the holidays.  Their prices generally can’t be beat.  The only downfall is that they stock a limited amount and once they are gone, they usually don’t come back.  If you see something you like while you’re in the store, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up.

I have listed some of my favorites from our local store below.  All of the items I price-checked against Amazon and they were cheaper 100% of the time.  If you have a smart phone, do a quick price check while you are in the store to guarantee you are getting a good deal.  This is just a small idea of what you may find in your local store.

Disney or Marvel 1000-Piece Art & Activity Set – $19.99 (you could almost split this apart and make it 2 or 3 gifts!)

Disney Princess Toddler Rapunzel and Maximus – $20

Lalaloopsy Dolls – $19.49 (I’ve seen them go cheaper, but generally only on flash sales or Lightning Deals through Amazon)

Techno Gears Marble Mania Mine Shaft – $39.99 (listed at $68.74 on Amazon)

Minnie’s Shopping Cart and Cash Register – $22.99 (listed at $52.99 on Amazon)

Hello Kitty Squinkies Set – $19.79

Hot Wheels Monster Jam World Finals Stunt Pack – $24.49

Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Cake & Ice Cream Confections (40+ accessories) – $14.97 (listed at $34.99 on Amazon)

Zoobies Book Buddies – $13.99 (these are listed over $40 on Amazon!)

Plush Pillow Pets – $10.99

VTech Brilliant Creations Advanced Notebook – $36.99 (listed at $44.19 on Amazon)

Barbie Ultimate Beach House – $49.99 (listed at $66.25 on Amazon)

Kidkraft Petite Chateau Dollhouse – $84.99 (listed at $131.30 on Amazon)

Stride Rite Girls Socks (8 pack) – $8.99 (just $1.12/pair!)

Kirkland Signature 100% Organic Cotton Pajamas – $11.99

If you are doing any additional shopping while you are there (and who isn’t?), check out this month’s full home mailer coupon match ups.  You can also read about my favorite things to pick up at Costco here.

Please let us know if you find any fun gifts or toys this year at Costco.  Happy shopping!

What will I be picking up?

I will for sure be picking up the feta cheese (I LOVE having this on hand for salads, grilled cheese, pretty much anything that needs a jolt of flavor) and the Starbucks coffee.  The price per ounce/pound can’t be beat.

Since we are moving into a new house, I am trying to easily pick up some basics instead of chasing deals all across town.  I picked up toilet paper last month at Costco, so this month will snag the Bounty paper towels and sponges.  We are pretty set on most everything else.

You can read all about my favorite things to pick up at Costco here.

I recently updated my Pantry/Household Stock-Up List with tons of Costco prices.  If you are looking for a specific price or looking to compare a Costco price with what I consider a stock-up price, definitely check out the list.

What will you be picking up this month?

What will I be picking up?

I am smack in the middle of a “Staying out of the Grocery Store” challenge AND we just sold our house, so I’m trying to do as little shopping as possible.  Mainly because we’re so busy, but also because I just don’t want to pack and move anything else.   Since we will be moving into our new house right around the time this mailer ends, I will most likely do a huge shopping trip in that last week.

I won’t have been stocking up on anything all month, so we’ll definitely pick up our usual suspects.  On top of that, I will be picking up the Izze drinks (my husband loves them!), the mayonnaise for our Honey Mustard Salad Dressing and the Annie’s variety pack for possible preschool snacks.  To replenish our stockpile, I will pick up both AA and AAA batteries (the price generally can’t be beat), the Cottonelle toilet paper (great price!), Ziploc bags and Glad ForceFlex trash bags.  If you have not used the Glad bags, you are seriously missing out.  I’m excited for this month, perfect timing for us to stock up our new house!

Emilie’s Favorite Things to Buy at Costco

March 22, 2012

When I was growing up my Dad had a motto, “If Costco doesn’t have it, we don’t need it.” I almost 100% agree with my Dad.  But, being that my budget isn’t as big as his I try to reign in my spending there and just buy what is really a good deal and what [...]

My Favorite Things to Buy at Costco

February 16, 2012

When I first started seriously using coupons after Little Dude #1 was born, we actually canceled our Costco membership.  We were getting so much for our pantry for so little out of pocket that it seemed a waste to spend the $50 for the annual membership if we were only buying a few things. Along [...]
