Ask TBFL Readers: How do you get your family on board when making changes to your diet and eating habits?

I’ve been posting over the last few months about how we overhauled our pantry and our eating habits and you all have responded enthusiastically to our journey and suggestions.  What I didn’t take into account was that some of you may not have families or spouses who are so keen on the idea of “change”.  I’m extremely lucky in that I have a spouse who will literally eat anything and kids who are young enough to instill good eating habits without having to break bad ones.

I had a reader email me back in the beginning of the series asking for suggestions.  Her spouse is not at all on board with the changes she would like to make and doesn’t seem to think they are necessary.  While this may not seem like a huge issue, their difference in opinion is rubbing off on the kids, creating confusion as to what is the “right” way to eat.

For my family, I do 99.9% of the cooking, grocery shopping and meal planning, so my husband was happy to go along with whatever I planned.  He was really interested in the food documentaries that really kicked off our journey, so that definitely helped.  He wasn’t under the impression that I was trying to kill him with brown rice or organic produce, he knew why we were making the switch.

Please share your ideas and suggestions in getting your family “on board”?  Do you take it one step at a time, involve your kids and spouse in the menu planning?  We would love any tips and tricks.  I would imagine there are many others out there who would be interested in any help you can give.

My husband takes better to change if it’s one thing at a time. I also find that if I don’t run something by him and just put it on the table, he won’t mind as long as it’s good tasting. I also do 99% of meal planning, shopping and cooking and he doesn’t have much of a choice. For the kids, I flat out told him there aren’t crackers for snack. They can have fruit or yogurt. He hasn’t went to the store for crackers yet.

I agree, the food documentaries and books do wonders in terms of “getting them on board” with the switch. My husband watched Food, Inc. and has read Omnivore’s Dilemma. Also, the “Eat this, not that!” series (cookbooks and supermarket guides) are great visual ways to make comparisons and promote healthier choices. We love our “Eat this, not that!” cookbook. So flavorful, easy, and budget-friendly!
