In the summer, we love to buy flats of berries from the farmers market. Because we live in Seattle and it is okay to drink hot chocolate all year round, we came up with this idea last summer. Put your little chefs to work by giving them a bowl to smash the berries in. We used our mortar and pestle, but a potato masher would also do the trick. Expect there to be seeds in the drink – it’s part of the berry experience!
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup boiling water
3 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup smashed berries
Combine the cocoa, sugar and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in boiling water and bring mixture to a boil, stirring continuously. Stir in the milk and heat until hot, but do not boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla and berries. Serves 4-5.
