Memorial Day

972468_10200727697549116_1403418221_nThis morning our gym (and many other CrossFit gyms across the country) ran a workout called Murph.

For Time:
1 mile run
100 Pull-Ups
200 Push-Ups
300 Squats
1 mile run

The workout is named after Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005.  This workout also falls under a category called Hero WODs (workout of the day).  Our gym runs these on occasion and they are generally really long and fairly brutal.  My friend Dani put it best when she told me that “We do these workouts because we are alive and we can.  Our bodies are physically capable of pushing through, so we do”.

To those who have served, are serving or have given the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of our country, we are beyond grateful.  So many of us don’t have to give our freedom a second thought because of our brave service men and women.  Whatever your political beliefs, we can at least all agree that those who have sacrificed are the ones we truly honor today.

Thank you.

What a unique way to show your support!
( I started to type fun, but decided against it as that workout doesn’t seem fun to me!!)
While I most certainly would collapse as an out-of-shape blob during the first 1 mile run, I truly appreciate the sentiment of your friend.
Do it because we can, Do it for those who can’t…suppose that could be applied to many areas of life.

It most certainly was NOT fun, took me 66 minutes! The moments when I thought I couldn’t keep going were the moments I tried to remember that there are others who don’t have the choice or the chance.

I have had over 40 surgeries including kidney/pancreas transplants, partial hip replacement, open heart, and sternal plating, and am also blind. This has encouraged me beyond belief to get back into a workout regimine and get back into shape. I am doing well, and will hopefully be able to send in occasional updates. Thanks!
