I have been selected to review a fabulous line of new gluten-free products from Franz Family Bakeries. Franz is a family-owned company that has been operating in the Northwest since 1906. The majority of their ingredients are sourced in the Northwest and they have seven different bakeries strategically placed around the areas that they serve to guarantee the freshest product possible. Franz products are only available in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana and Northern California.
Our family follows a Paleo-style lifestyle, which means no grains of any kind. We don’t label ourselves necessarily “gluten-free” as there are several other things we have eliminated as well, like rice and other grains. We generally don’t have any substitution foods in the house either, like gluten-free bread or pasta. Instead of trying to replace these items, we’ve just cut them out entirely. However, there are some days when my poor husband thinks he might die without a sandwich. Enter Franz gluten-free bread.
We have NEVER had any other GF brand, so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I was pleasantly surprised. Both the bread and the hamburger buns were moist and fairly light. I was expecting something super dense, but that wasn’t the case at all. We made grilled cheese sandwiches for the boys and the bread toasted up perfectly and my dear husband was able to make a sandwich to satisfy his craving. All the items we tried had wonderful flavor.
Since these products are made with cultured rice flour as a natural preservative, they don’t have a super long shelf life. We threw one loaf of bread in the freezer so it wouldn’t go to waste. We can either pull out the entire loaf or toast a slice at a time straight out of the freezer.
