A Week in the Life: Weekly grocery shopping and homemade mayonnaise

Welcome to a Week in the Life.  Each week I will be sharing a round-up of all the different ways I saved our family money or time.  Or both.  The purpose of this series is to highlight the fact that there are SO many different methods you can use to lower your overall budget that don’t involve mad-crazy coupon shopping.

We are kind of all over the map this week and last, but here are a few things we did to try to keep our grocery budget in check.

Weekly Grocery Shopping

There were so many good deals this week at several different stores, that to get the best price on everything, I would have had to shop all day at ten different stores.  Since I have two kids and nowhere near enough time or desire to do that, I chose the one store that had the majority of items I wanted at a decent price and fudged on a few of the others.

Yoke’s has a great deal this week on boneless fryer breasts ($1.77/lb!), so that was my choice.  Instead of picking the produce I wanted before I looked at the deals, I chose to pick up what was on sale and work with that.  Asparagus was $1.58 per pound, which is crazy low and strawberries were well priced too.  If I had gone to Fred Meyer, I would have chosen something different based on sale price.  The grapes weren’t an amazing price, but my 2-year old dropped them all on the floor, so I felt obligated to buy.

We are generally eating clean, but I have a weakness for baking treats, so I decided to just suck it up and pick up some sugar while it was on sale. I have been buying in bulk at Winco, which is a decent price, but I was lying to myself that I didn’t need or want more.  I always need and want more.  I compared the prices per ounce/pound to my Pantry/Household Stock-Up Price List and these were worth it.

Homemade vs Store Bought

We recently ran out of mayonnaise and I have been toying with the idea of just making my own.  We don’t use it very often and the ingredients are simple enough, but just hadn’t gotten around to it.

We were having a CrossFit Open workout/potluck last Sunday and I have really been wanting to try this Broccoli Salad, which of course calls for mayonnaise.  As luck would have it, I stumbled across a recipe for homemade Baconnaise (just like what it sounds) from Practical Paleo and I was in heaven.  Super, super easy with ingredients we already had in the house.  I’m channeling my lovely grandparents by keeping bacon grease in the fridge and this was the reason, absolutely.

A little (or kind of a lot) of whisking the few simple ingredients and magic happened.  Liquid to mayonnaise, with a few simple turns of a whisk.  Brilliant.

The broccoli salad already had crumbled bacon, so it all seemed like a match made in swine heaven to me.  Nobody loves bacon like CrossFitters, I swear.

Question of the Week: Have you ever made your own mayonnaise?  I don’t think I’ll ever buy it again.  We don’t use it enough to buy a big jug and it’s super easy to make!
