Fitness Goals Update: Stepping WAY out of my comfort zone

When my husband started talking about this Tough Rhino Mud Run that was coming to the Tri-Cities, I was mildly interested.  I’m sure you’ve seen these runs all over the place, it is basically a 5K run with obstacles to test your physical strength along the way.  When he first started talking about it, it was several months off, so agreeing to it felt just fine.  It won’t be here for months.  I still have a few weeks.  I still have 5 more days.  Wait, it’s tomorrow?

If you have been following my blog for any length of time, you know my husband and I have made some serious changes in our lives.  As best we can, we work out everyday.  We do P90X (Amazon), which keeps us pushing ourselves to the limit with every workout.  We work hard, we lift heavier and heavier weights, we eat right.

But.

I work out at home, with nobody watching me.  I push myself as much as possible, but there is no competition.  If I needed to give up, I could.  This Mud Run was a whole different animal.  I was literally sick to my stomach the morning of the race and could barely sleep.  When I get nervous, I bake.  My family ate an enormous Apple Puff Pancake for breakfast.

This is me!  Me who works out everyday, who does a workout that when I mention it to people, they look at me like I’m crazy.  I was terrified of the unknown.  Terrified that if I couldn’t complete an obstacle, they would shine a spotlight on me and call me a fake.  Terrified that someone would call me out and tell me I’m not as strong as I think.

Guess what happened?

I finished that darn race.  I ran up an 8-foot quarter pipe and climbed over.  I gave it my best shot and completely shocked myself with my ability and strength.  I had never given myself the chance to prove what I had accomplished.  When I saw the picture that the photographer took (shown above), all I could think was “I did that.  Did anybody see that?  I ran a 5K!”.

Push yourself, friends.  If you are just starting out on your fitness journey, feel like you need a challenge or, like me, have been coasting your way through your comfort zone with the greatest of ease, try something new.  Amaze yourself.  Find out what your body is capable of.  Don’t settle.

You go girl!
I’m glad that you pushed yourself to do this, you should be proud.
As for me, well I carried in all of the groceries by myself today….does that count?!

OH, wait…even better. I actually moved our hand weights on Friday, so I could vacuum the floor underneath them :)
Surely that counts for some exercise, right?!

Thanks Brenda! You’re ahead of me in the game if you actually pick up your weights to vacuum under them. I use them to work out but let dust settle under them. :)

Nice job Melody!! That is so great! You really inspire me. I have been doing JM 30 day shred almost every day (except Sundays) for the past several weeks. Then I started running a little (I’m up to 25 min. straight!) when I can in the evenings as well. The running is especially hard and I have learned it’s a total mind game for me. It requires mental strength and I have to totally push myself every time. But like you said – I am surprised at what my body can do. The last time I went running (to be fair…it’s more like a slow jog) I was so happy and I kept saying to myself, “I’M DOING THIS!! LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!!”

I’ve lost 20 lbs. in the last few months and have at least that much more to go. But I’m finally on my way! Thanks so much for all of your inspiring posts on this topic. I think of you every time I push play! :)
