Albertsons Gift Card Promo: Free groceries, gas discounts, cash back AND game tickets

by Melody on June 18, 2012

I’m sure most of you have seen by now the Albertsons gift card promotion that is up and running.  We did this last year and there were WAY more gift card options, so I was a little bummed this year.  I was really hoping that the Disney gift cards would be included, as we are planning a trip next year.  However, we were still really able to make this work to our advantage!

Here’s the details:

Spend $100 on select gift cards, Get a $20 catalina towards Albertsons groceries – limit 1 per transaction

This promo runs through June 21st and the following gift cards are included: Lowe’s, iTunes, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, JCPenney, Applebee’s, Kohl’s and Sears.

How we made it work for us:

We are in the process of selling our home and buying a new house and are going to have some decent home improvement purchases to make over the next 6 months or so.  At the very least, we will have to buy a new fridge.  For us, Lowe’s has always been very price-competitive, so we decided to take the money we have saved for home improvement and convert it into gift cards.

We bought:

  • $550 in Lowe’s gift cards
  • $25 Cabela’s gift card for my Dad’s birthday
  • $25 iTunes gift card for my brother’s high school graduation

I had to do 6 different transactions of $100 each, but for each transaction I earned a $20 catalina coupon good on any purchase of $20 or more.

But that’s not all!

Holy mackerel, this promotion has worked out well for me.  Not only did we get $120 in free groceries, I earned $10 in additional catalinas just for using my Albertsons reward card.  You earn points for each gift card purchase and for each set of 5,000 points you get, you get a $5 catalina.  The best part about these is that they don’t expire until the end of July!  I also got a $.10/gallon gas discount and tons of Summer Sizzlin’ game tickets.

The only downfall from these free grocery catalinas is that they do expire in about a week, so I’m going to have to be very intentional about my purchases.

Here are 3 transactions I have done so far:

Transaction 1:
Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat Pastry Flour $5.29
(10) Gulden’s Spicy Brown Mustard $.80 each wyb 10
Wild Harvest Organic Fair Trade Coffee $6.99
Used $20 catalina
Paid $.28 for everything!

Before you start to wonder if I only feed my children mustard for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we use it to make this amazing Honey Mustard Dressing.  We use it on salad everyday and as a delicious dip for veggies.

Transaction 2:
(3) Baby Basics Jumbo Pack Diapers $6.99
Used $20 catalina
Paid $.97 after catalina or $.32 per pack!

Transaction 3:
4 lbs Wild Harvest Organic Carrots
Cilantro
1.5 lbs Tomatoes
(4) Red Bell Peppers ($.50 each!)
French’s Mustard $.75 after coupon
(2) Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips (for Homemade Protein Bars)
Annie’s Arthur Mac & Cheese (for lunch)
Used $20 catalina
Paid $0 for everything!

My plan for the last three is to wait until Wednesday to check out the new ad, just in case there is anything fantastic.  I will try to pick up items I can’t always find great deals on or have coupons for, like steel cut oats, organic peanut butter and more produce.  They are running a great promotion on the new Sherlock Holmes movie, which would make a great gift for my brother for his birthday.  Free gifts are the best!

I would love to hear how you are making this promotion work for you!  What gift cards have you bought and how are you using your catalinas?

I too bought six-and only has we own rental properties that ultimately need work and my husband is building a play house so we would be going to Lowe’s anyway. For the most part I bought the Kelloggs items that I had coupons for and that had the Spiderman movie codes inside. From what I bought I got 3 $5.00 of your next order at Albertson’s and enough codes for almost 10 movie tickets. I am excited (movies don’t expire till next July and are ANY movie!!)
