Our frugal family getaway (aka “Why I Love Daily Deal Sites”)

by Melody on July 31, 2011

We have had a crazy, jam-packed summer this year.  I actually think this happens every year, but when I’m in the thick of it, it feels like a mad house.  Almost every weekend is scheduled.

A deal came up on Groupon a few months ago for a very inexpensive hotel room in Liberty Lake, which is just a few hours away from us.  I decided we could use a little getaway for just our family.  I am not wired to pay full price for anything, so I set out to plan a frugal trip.

  • One-night hotel stay through Groupon with free continental breakfast and a pool for cheap entertainment
  • I packed lunch at home to eat in the park when we arrived in Spokane

  • 4 tickets on the Spokane Falls Skyride through Groupon

  • One of my fabulous readers generously offered our family her guest passes to the amazing Spokane Children’s Museum, which was a wonderful surprise.  Thanks Heather!
  • Dinner with a Restaurant.com voucher – This was the original plan, but apparently the restaurant we chose is not open on the weekends.  Sweet.  Our kids were getting a little grumpy and really wanted to swim, so we ended up eating a gourmet dinner from the Albertsons deli.

It was so fantastic to spend some fun, relaxed and (mostly) unplanned time with my family.  If you’re wondering what happens to two happy, tired boys after a long afternoon in the park..

I know some of you might be opposed to planning a trip this way or not comfortable with using vouchers, but this is the only way to go in my opinion.  Not only are we saving money, but we end up trying different activities and restaurants that we most likely wouldn’t try otherwise.  If I don’t have a coupon or voucher, we usually end up going to the same places and doing the same things.

I would love to hear your favorite tips on saving money while on vacation!
