My husband and I have been married for four years, we met in college and have been together for almost nine years. We both graduated college with a degree in Telecommunications and have gone increasingly separate ways in our careers ever since. I worked for a computer company for a few years, before leaving to work at Starbucks for three years. I left my job right before our son was born in July of 2008 and have stayed home with him ever since. I love being home, but the old cliche is true in my case, I feel like I need to put my brain to work!
We started Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover in July of 2007 and it has been life-altering! A friend of mine let me read her copy of his book and we have never looked back. It’s not even that we felt like we were collapsing under our huge debt (which we didn’t have), but that we couldn’t get on the same page about our finances. When people say the biggest arguments in a marriage are about money, they’re not kidding!
Since starting this transformation, we have paid off over $30,000 in debt. Most of this was paid off before our son was born, when we went down to one income, things slowed WAY down for us as far as bill-paying. With two little ones now, we really felt that we wanted to reintroduce ourselves to Dave and his ways. I know this type of lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but I can’t imagine living any other way. We have a happy marriage and I am able to stay home with our son, with barely a thought of “how are we going to survive?” I told a friend this morning that it’s not even paying off the debt that was the best part for me (although it was pretty good!) but the fact that our marriage is a million times stronger because of it!
Our lives are not totally consumed by money management. We LOVE sports! I think that might actually be an understatement. We watch just about every sport known to man (my husband does watch them all. If it’s on TV, he watches it!). We play some kind of fantasy sport most of the year round. We are huge Mariners, Seahawks and WSU Cougar fans and love to attend games. Our poor kids are going to grow up thinking that nothing else is ever shown on TV. I love to cook, LOVE to read and now, have a huge passion for couponing and deal shopping! My husband would spend every waking minute playing softball (or just talking about it), so my sons and I have learned to love to watch him play.
I hope you enjoy following our family through our successes and failures. We recently (March 2010) paid off our last interest-carrying bill and are DEBT FREE except for our mortgage! We have a few things to save for before we continue on with Dave’s plan. I’m really enjoying sharing our journey and keeping myself accountable, while passing along what we have learned along the way. Welcome to this beautiful frugal life!
